Mormon Church Backs Gay Rights

Taken from USA Today

“The church supports these ordinances because they are fair and reasonable and do not do violence to the institution of marriage,” Michael Otterson, the director of public affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said.

Once again, we find out that the Mormon Church caves in to the pressure of the media pressure and the “popular” thing to do.

If you can remember back to “Proposition 8” in California that said marriage should only be between a man and a woman. The Mormon Church put a ton of money into advertising in support of this proposition. Much to their dismay, the Mormon Church came under much scrutiny.

“with many protesting outside temples that singled out Mormons as the key culprits in restricting the rights of gay couples.” says USA Today.

So it is obvious that the Mormon Church officially stood (emphasis on the past tense) in opposition to gay marriage.

NOW, they are backing gay marriage rights. Hmmmm…why would they do this? Let’s briefly look into their history of doing this same thing.

POLYGAMY It is still in the scriptures, Doctrine and Covenants 132:60-66 that a man can have many wives. And these scriptures are supposedly “directly from God”. Then supposedly God conveniently changed His mind as we find out in the Manifesto to outlaw plural marriage (1890). I use the word “conveniently”, because this matter of polygamy was the only reason Utah was held from being a part of the United States and the U.S. armed forces was going to overtake them for being law breakers by practicing polygamy. So it was under the pressure from the U.S. that they changed their position. Then Utah became a state 6 years later.

RACISM Brigham Young (their prophet who supposedly speaks for God) said in his Journal of Discourses that black people are cursed and can never hold their Priesthood. This means that they can never be a part of the Mormon Church. He says that they are a cursed people and commanded that no white people be married to black people. This is quite different from where they stand today. When I visited Temple Square in Salt Lake City, there was a diversity among the Mormon Missionaries, black, white, hispanic, asian, etc. I asked how this could be if their prophet said that they are a cursed people. To which the missionary responded by saying something to the effect of, “they didn’t know any better back then.” Wait a minute. If Young speaks for God, that means God didn’t know any better back then.

All these things show a big lie that is told among the Mormon Church: Lie #1: Their Prophets speak for God.

Truth #1: God has not changed and will never change (James 1:17). What is a sin 5,000 years ago will be a sin 5,000 years into the future. Therefore their Prophets can not be speaking for God, since they change with the culture around them.

It is also interesting that even though their “position” as a church has changed, they still keep those false scriptures in their books. If they take them out, they are admitting that Joseph Smith prophesied falsely. If they leave them in, True Believers can point them to those areas to show them their lies. Either way, it’s bad news for the Mormon Church.

Pray for the Mormons that they might see the grace of Jesus Christ that can only had in faith. Ephesians 2:8-9
